Lan Jia Gua Bao

Lan Jia Gua Bao (Section 3, Roosevelt Rd & Shida Rd, Da’an District, Taipei) – this restaurant serves a local specialty called the Gua Bao (Taiwan’s answer to the hamburger): a fluffy white bun enclosing stewed, fatty pork belly. This local fast food-friendly item reportedly got its roots in mainland China’s Fujian province, but somehow got popular in Taiwan. The Gua Bao served here has two types of fillings — lean or fatty pork. The bun is garnished with traditional pickled mustard greens and peanuts dusted with sugar and cilantro. This and a couple of cold beers make for a satisfying quick meal – perfect for tourists on the go.
